So Long, 1UP

I don’t know exactly when I started reading, but I do know that it was before I ever visited Kotaku, Gamasutra, or even Penny Arcade.

It was probably sometime after I asked my dad to buy me a copy of EGM while he was in the checkout line at Blockbuster.

It was definitely before I won that sweepstakes they ran.

It was after I stopped paying subscribing to Nintendo Power which, despite all its charm, history and how much it meant to everyone, was still very specialized in the kind of content it offered.

It was before Retronauts started, which I was fortunate to catch in its infancy, and proud to have followed through until the very end.

Despite not being able to pin down where I started reading 1UP, I can’t help but feel terrible knowing that I won’t be able to continue reading it.

The site introduced me to some people who remain my favorite writers to this day, including Seanbaby, Chris Kohler, Scott Sharkey, and Jeremy Parish, who I have and will continue to follow. Retronauts host Bob Mackey had gone from being a slightly awkward guy filling big shoes to one of the best podcast hosts I’ve ever had the pleasure to listen to. Those guys, and countless other 1Up & EGM alumni, were the group of people who made me want to start writing about games, because they were the some of the best in the industry.

I believe I’m going to take this as a sign. I think it’s time for me to get started on that who career in games journalism.
