Well Then: Where To Now?

The news is out: InfamousKidd.com, The site I helped to get started and that I’ve been writing for since early 2010, is shutting down.

InfamousKidd.com is where I got started writing in earnest two years ago with Mascott’s Movie Rewind, and more recently it hosted my weekly Walking Dead recap, “Remembering the Dead.” Those columns are what got me into writing for Ogeeku.com, and possibly columns for Ain’t It Cool News sometime in the near future.

So what now? In a way, I’ve become a man without a country. It’s a first for me in my writing career, to not have a weekly column at Infamous Kidd to fall back on come Sunday night. To be sure, it’s something I should get used to as a freelancer, but for the moment it’s a strange feeling.

I heard the news about the site shutting down a few weeks ago, and I’ve had some time to think about it. So here’s my plan. I won’t be continuing Remembering the Dead up through the end of the season at Ain’t It Cool News, instead giving myself the time to actually enjoy the show. That is, as opposed to taking vigorous notes while I watch it, watching it again, watching the after-show, then writing for four hours before finally passing out with half of a finished article at 4:30 AM. I might continue the article somewhere a bit different, but none of that is anywhere near figured out yet. That, and, because I can say this now, I don’t actually think it’s the best show on television.

He's going to tell them how he met their mother REALLY soon. I can feel it.

Ogeeku will get an article from me whenever I’m feeling particularly nerdy and my friends won’t indulge me in three hours of “Seriously guys, how good was Mother 3?”

"So good."

I’m going to continue writing something here at TheMascott.com every once in a while. Maybe I’ll break out my Wacom tablet and draw something fun. Maybe I’ll post my How I Met Your Mother spec script. Maybe I’ll write 4,000 words on why owning an HP Touchpad has made me a better person. I’ve got a lot of ideas.

In all seriousness, what all of this really means is that I’m taking a bit of a break. The ability to work on my own projects on my own schedule is what I need right now to be able to actually do more. Sometimes, as a creative person, you need to just “be” for a while, even if that thing making you a creative person is just analyzing zombies, watching old movies, or posting a GIF of a monkey dancing. It’s not a hiatus, because I know I’ll never come back from one of those. For a moment, however, I’d like to imagine that I’m free to do nothing if I so choose.

I’m looking forward to whatever the future brings, and I hope you’ll stick around to see what I’ve got coming. I don’t know what it’ll be, but I can promise that it’ll be awesome. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
